Privacy Policy
This policy explains how Groccy ("we", "us") handles information when you use the Groccy app and groccy.com.au. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
What stays on your phone
Your shopping lists, ticked items, chosen stores, monthly budget, spending history, savings, pantry, watched prices and receipt photos are stored only on your device. We can't see them. Deleting the app deletes them.
What is sent to our server, and why
| When you… | What's sent | What we keep |
|---|---|---|
| Search for a product or compare a list | The words you search for (for example "milk 2L") | Searches are cached for a short time to make the app fast. A search with no price yet may be added to an anonymous queue so we can fetch its price. None of this is linked to you. |
| Ask for nearby stores | Your approximate location (latitude and longitude), only when you tap to see stores near you | Not stored. It's used once to find the closest stores and discarded. |
| Snap a product, receipt or nutrition panel | The photo | The photo itself is not stored on our server. For receipts, the store, the product names and their prices are kept as anonymous price data (no card numbers, names or loyalty numbers). For nutrition panels, the nutrition values are saved against that product so everyone gets its score. |
| Turn a recipe into a list | The link or text you paste | Not stored beyond a short cache. |
| Share a list live with family | That list's items, ticks and name | Stored on our server under a random 12-character code until you ask us to delete it. Anyone with the code can see and edit that list, so only share it with people you trust. |
| Watch a price | The names of the items you watch, when Groccy checks prices (including in the background) | Not linked to you. |
Like every website and app, our hosting provider sees your IP address when the app talks to our server. We use it only to protect the service from abuse (rate limits) and don't keep it in our records.
Barcode scanning and the camera
Barcodes are read on your phone. The camera is only used when you open a scanner, and nothing is recorded in the background.
Notifications
Budget alerts, use-it-up reminders and price-drop alerts are created on your phone. We don't use push notification accounts or tokens.
Who helps us run Groccy
- Cloudflare hosts our server, database and website.
- Google (Gemini API) reads photos, recipes and list words for us (for example, turning "milk" into "full cream milk 3L" or reading a receipt). Content sent to Google is handled under Google's terms for the Gemini API, which may allow Google to use it to improve its services.
- Apify helps us collect public store prices. It never receives information about you.
- Open Food Facts and OpenStreetMap provide product and store-location data. We download their data; we don't send them yours.
Some of these providers process data outside Australia (including the United States). We only use providers with strong security and send them only what each feature needs.
What we don't do
- No accounts, names, email addresses or phone numbers are needed to use Groccy.
- No advertising, no ad tracking and no selling or renting of information.
- No analytics or tracking tools in the app.
Children
Groccy is a general shopping tool and isn't directed at children under 13.
Your choices and rights
- You can use Groccy without location (just skip "nearby stores").
- You can turn camera and notification access on or off in your iPhone Settings.
- To delete a shared list from our server, or to ask what information we hold or correct it, email us with the list's code or details.
If you're not happy with how we've handled a privacy matter, contact us first. You can also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes
If we change how Groccy handles information, we'll update this page and the date above. Big changes will also be shown in the app.
